Autism & AuDHD Assessment for Women

Sometimes autism doesn't look the way people expect it to.

You may have spent years feeling different without having a clear explanation for why. Social situations may require more thought or effort than they seem to for other people. You may rely on routines, preparation, or familiar environments more than others realize—or find changes, sensory experiences, and competing demands surprisingly difficult to manage.

At the same time, you may be highly capable, socially engaged, professionally successful, or skilled at adapting to what others expect of you. You may have learned to observe, rehearse, mask, or compensate in ways that make your difficulties less visible to other people.

For some women, questions about autism emerge after an ADHD diagnosis doesn't fully explain their experience. For others, ADHD and autism may both be part of the picture. Changes in work, relationships, parenting, caregiving, or hormonal transitions can also make longstanding patterns harder to compensate for.

An autism or AuDHD assessment can help determine whether autism, ADHD, or both are part of the explanation—and develop a more complete understanding of how you experience and navigate the world.

Why Autism Can Be Missed in Women

Autism doesn't always match the picture people have in mind when they think about the diagnosis. Some women reach adulthood without being identified because their differences were less obvious to others, because they learned to adapt or mask, or because their experiences were attributed to anxiety, depression, shyness, perfectionism, sensitivity, or personality.

Social ability also doesn't rule out autism. Some autistic women are highly attuned to other people and have spent years learning social expectations through observation, preparation, and deliberate effort. They may have friendships, relationships, successful careers, and strong communication skills while still experiencing significant internal effort, uncertainty, or exhaustion.

Other patterns may be easier to recognize in retrospect: intense or highly focused interests, sensory sensitivities, a strong need for predictability, difficulty with transitions, periods of overwhelm or shutdown, or feeling as though social interaction requires more conscious processing than it seems to require for other people.

For some women, ADHD further complicates the picture. Traits associated with ADHD and autism can overlap, interact, or seemingly contradict one another—for example, wanting predictability while struggling to maintain routines, or seeking stimulation while also becoming easily overwhelmed by it.

The question isn't whether you match a stereotype of autism. It's whether autism—or autism together with ADHD—helps explain the patterns you've experienced across your life.

What an Autism & AuDHD Assessment Looks At

Autism assessment involves more than determining whether you endorse enough traits on a questionnaire. Dr. Ashley considers developmental patterns, social communication and relationships, sensory experiences, routines and interests, masking and compensation, and how these experiences have affected your functioning across different periods of your life.

Patterns Across Your Life

Autism is developmental, so current experiences are considered alongside childhood and developmental history. Assessment looks at patterns that may have been present for years—even when they were not recognized as autism at the time—and how those patterns may have changed as expectations, environments, and responsibilities changed.

Social Communication & Relationships

Assessment explores how you experience and navigate social interaction, communication, friendships, relationships, and social expectations. This includes not only what other people may observe, but the amount of conscious thought, preparation, interpretation, or recovery that social interaction may require.

Sensory Experiences, Interests & Predictability

The assessment considers sensory sensitivities and preferences, focused interests, routines, repetitive behaviors, responses to change and transitions, and the role that predictability may play in helping you regulate and function.

Masking, Strategies & Compensation

Many women develop sophisticated ways of adapting to expectations or making their differences less visible. Assessment considers masking, learned social strategies, preparation, imitation, environmental choices, and other forms of compensation—as well as the effort or cost involved in maintaining them.

ADHD & the Whole Clinical Picture

When ADHD is also part of the question, the assessment examines how ADHD and autistic traits may overlap, interact, or affect one another. Anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, sleep, hormonal changes, and other psychological or contextual factors are also considered when relevant.

The goal is to understand the pattern—not to begin with autism, ADHD, or AuDHD as the assumed answer.

What to Expect from Your Autism & AuDHD Assessment

Your assessment is individualized to the questions that brought you in. While the specific measures used may vary, an autism or AuDHD assessment typically includes:

Questionnaires & Background Information
Before your appointment, you'll complete questionnaires about your current functioning, developmental and mental health history, autistic traits, sensory experiences, masking, repetitive behaviors and interests, executive functioning, and other areas relevant to your assessment.

In-Depth Clinical & Developmental Interview
You'll meet with Dr. Ashley to explore your experiences across different periods and settings in your life. This includes looking at social communication and relationships, sensory experiences, routines and interests, responses to change, masking and compensation, and areas of strength or difficulty.

Standardized Assessment
You'll complete evidence-based measures selected to evaluate autism and relevant areas of functioning. For AuDHD assessments, this also includes assessment of ADHD. Additional measures may be included when needed to better understand overlapping or alternative explanations for your experiences.

Collateral & Developmental Information
With your permission, information from a parent, partner, therapist, or another person who knows you well may be incorporated to provide additional developmental or current-functioning context. Relevant records may also be reviewed when available.

Feedback, Written Report & Recommendations
You'll meet with Dr. Ashley to review the findings and have an opportunity to ask questions. You'll receive a comprehensive written report documenting the results, diagnostic conclusions when applicable, and individualized recommendations for next steps.

You won't simply receive a diagnosis—or be told that you don't have one. The goal is for you to understand what the assessment found, how the findings fit together, and what that information means for you.
